Wave Rock WA 6359
Wave Rock is a spectacular ‘wave-like’ rock formation 343 km east of Perth. Situated within the Golden Outback region and just 4 km east of Hyden, it measures 15 m high x 110 m long and is in fact the northern face of Hyden Rock, a large eroded granite remnant. Wave Rock is just one of hundreds of granite outcrops in the Central Wheat Belt formed almost 3 000 million years ago by wind erosion which has undercut the base of the rock resulting in this overhang. The unique shape is further enhanced by the vertical algae streaks and run-off water chemical staining. The area attracts over 130 000 visitors annually with a number of tours on offer including Wildflower Tour (spring), Wildlife Tour and Aboriginal Tours. Another interesting feature of the area is the Holland Track, dating back to the goldrush days, that was re-opened in 1990s and is popular with 4WD enthusiasts.
